Hanging Shelves and Mirrors on Barcelona Walls Without Damage
The plug that came with your shelf was designed for a solid concrete wall. Most interior walls in Barcelona are not that, which is why shelves here so often end up on the floor.

Identify the wall first
Tap it. A hollow, drum-like sound means a thin partition or hollow brick. A dull, dense sound means solid brick or concrete. Drill dust also tells you a lot: red dust is brick, white is plasterboard or plaster, grey is concrete.
Match the fixing to the wall
Using the right fixing matters far more than using a bigger screw.
- Solid brick or concrete: standard nylon plug, masonry bit, hammer drill
- Hollow brick: long expansion plug or chemical anchor
- Plasterboard: metal spring toggle or self-drilling anchor
- Heavy mirrors and TVs: always find the structural wall, never the partition alone
When to call someone
Anything above roughly 20 kg, anything over a bed or sofa, and anything near where cables or pipes may run. A detector scan takes two minutes and avoids a very expensive afternoon.
